MATRIARCH Are We Not One

Before their successful careers as harpists, guitarist/songwriter Carol Tatum and bassist Lisa Lynne Franco were band members and respected fret shredders in Carol's band Matriarch, circa late 80s/early 90s. In fact, this is how Carol and Lisa initially met. On vocals is David "Swan" Montgomery, now vocalist for the cover band Led Zepagain. Double bass drum monster Brent Harknett added his powerful and amazing playing to create a band inspired by Led Zeppelin with Carol writing all of the original songs, such as the one in this video ("Are We Not One"). Matriarch performed at The Troubadour, The Whiskey, FM Station and other venues to large audiences and garnered excellent reviews and enthusiastic fans and Lisa and Carol set an excellent precedence as quality female musicians at a time when "eye candy" amateur female musicians were being supported.

Then, in the early 90s grunge appeared, which Carol loved, and Matriarch disbanded. Carol became a fan of Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots but was frustrated with the lack of music industry support for quality female musicians/songwriters. So, Carol put her guitar in the closet, bought one of Lisa's harps, taught herself to play, recorded a first CD and the rest is history for Carol and Lisa as professional harpists.

In subsequent years, Carol formed Angels Of Venice and Lisa Franco became Lisa Lynne and both went on to have successful harp careers signing to Windham Hill Records. Lisa thrived on Windham Hill but Carol became uncomfortable with the pairing since her music was darker and more edgy than the label identity of adult contemporary. Her neoclassical group Angels Of Venice thrived but blues-based hard rock never left Carol's veins. Carol wrote for two albums on Polydor Records with vocalist Lenny Wolf from the band Kingdom Come. Carols new CD, "Ancient Delerium," featuring Carol on electric guitar once again will be released Summer, 2009 featuring the incredible vocalist Charles Edward from the industrial metal band Seraphim Shock.
